UGANDA INFORMATION
For all passengers on International departures from Entebbe International Airport, Airport taxes of USD 40 or the equivalent in local shilling may be charged if not included in your ticket price.
For domestic flights out of Entebbe will charge USD 4 or the equivalent in local currency.
CLIMATE
Uganda is a temperate condition country, so its generally pleasant and vary some time of the year depending on your location in the country. It gets cool during the nights especially around the Bwindi Impenetrable forest because of the dense vegetation and the high altitude. The rainy seasons are always in April through May and our long rains come in October through November. Although the climate is changing with everything that is going on in the world today, Uganda's global positioning has keep it at a relatively good climate with the Equator running across the country. But we have experienced some changes lately.
CLOTHING
Our emphasis on clothing is for your comfort. Very rarely will visitor be expected to conform to a specific dressing code {But if we are visiting local people and cultural sites we strongly advise our clients to try and put up with tradition dressing.}. If your are Gorilla or Chimpanzee tracking, something sturdy [Not bright] is recommended to protect you from scratches and a good pair of hiking boots at one point you will need gloves, so a pair is not a bad idea.
Great-apes would say safari clothing will save the best all the time on safari. Do not worry about the laundry most of our safari camps and lodges have laundry services.
COMMUNICATION
All in all Uganda's communication is so far the best in East and Central Africa if not the all of Africa, Cell phones will work almost everywhere, most of the camps and lodges in the parks are connected on the Internet. All our safari guide carry cell phones all the time so in case of an emergence our clients are welcome to use those phones.
LOCAL CURRENCY
Uganda's local currency is called shillings and its in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 notes. We have several banks in big cities where we can exchange our money into local currency, and we recommend that you exchange you money before getting out of Entebbe and Kampala as the exchange rates goes down as you get out of the centre. We have an ATM machine at the Airport that you can use to get local money but it will take Visa and America express. Exchange rates are never stable, but we also put it at US$1=1700/, PD&1=2800 and Euro 1=2200.
CREDIT CARDS
Out side Kampala the capital city and Entebbe the International airport, Credit card use is very limited only accepted by large hotels and high class safari camps, and most shops will not accept it as this will be very much restricted to majors banks in the country. Banks Barclays, Standard Chartered, Baroda, Stanbic and DFCU bank will be of importance to credit card user.
DAYLIGHT
Sunrises at around 0630 hours and sets at about 1930 hours. This will slightly vary depending on your location in the country, As you will in the northern pole and then cross the equator to southern pole at one point in your trip.
ELECTRICITY
Electric supply in Uganda is 220--240 volt, its hydroelectric and we use the UK plug-in so tourists from the US should come with adapters to fit and give the right power for their equipment.
MEDICAL
There are good medical facilities, with American and European trained doctors in Kampala, but we strongly advise our clients to carry with them medical kits. And of our clients are advised to get medical and travel insurance before coming for the trip as this will be of great help in case of an evacuation to a kampala or Nairobi.
HEALTH
Vaccinations against yellow fever and Malaria if can is very advised as no body as allowed to trek Mountain if sick. All clients going to track Mountain Gorillas most be in shape as this can be strenuous activity. All our safari vans are equipped with medical kits and our guides can give first aid and take care of minor injuries and ailments.
LANGUAGE
Uganda's official is English with Luganda and Kiswahili widely spoken all across the country.
PHOTOGRAPHY
The choice of camera accessories is very limited in this part of the world, so come as equipped as possible. Before you take a picture of some one as drive in the country we recommend all our clients to ask politely and we most of the people will be OK and some will ask for money. We highly do not recommend any of our client to give money at any time as this turned into a begging habit in some parts of the country. Please no flash photographing will with the Gorillas. Military installations, Government buildings and policeman should not be photographed at any time unless given permission. Which will always be given if you ask.
SECURITY
Despite the ups and downs, Uganda had enjoyed a stable, peaceful, progressive and democratic government under Mr Musevane Yoweri Kaguta for over twenty years and tourists security has been guaranteed by the president in all protected and across the country's boarders. Today Uganda posses to have the safest city on the African continent.
TIME
Uganda is three hours ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
VISA
Uganda's visa requirements vary according to you country of origin and should be checked well in advance with the nearest Ugandan Embassy or High Commission in your country. You can still secure a visa on arrival in the country and a charge of $ 30--$ 50 may be paid at the point of entry. |
